The International Space Station is not the first habitable artificial satellite but it by far surpasses any attempts in the past to create a unified structure in space that can be used for a multitude of different purposes. It was such an immense project, when first introduced in 1988, that there was no way that one agency could fund the entire planning and construction. Because of this fact, three agencies merged, each adding their own piece to the final construction of the ISS. The United States, Canada, and Japan all created components which were then launched by United States and Russian rockets. It easily became the single most expensive item ever constructed. Another main focus of the ISS is to find out more about the possibility of space colonization. Affects that living in this environment have on the human body over a long period of time are key for us to find out if we ever want to look into permanent colonization of space. â€Å"Unprotected presence in space is characterized by an intense radiation field (consisting primarily of protons and other subatomic charged particles from the solar wind, in addition to cosmic rays), high vacuum, extreme temperatures, and microgravity.† (Wiki). The loss of gravity can also have traumatic affect on the human body such as muscle loss and bone weakening. Different experiments have been performed to remedy this danger, and make it safer for human life. Another focus is microgravity, and the unique affects that it can have in different situations su ch as evolution, development, and growth of not only humans, but animals and plants as well. Not only do they focus on experimentation and research, but they also spend a good deal exploring the depths of space that we know little about.
